Ah lovely. Czechgrind. ‘Cos of my fond memories of fun times in the CZ, most stuff that originates from that highly pleasant land always makes me forget whatever I'm doin' and lend an eye, ear or tastebud to it. I usually find grind from the Czech Republic to be as warm, enjoyable and comfortin' as its cuisine. Indeed, the classick stuff by Cerebral Turbulency is very similar to a good goulash served with soft bread dumpling and extremely drinkable ale.
Now, I'm sure the grind-headed purists will slap me about for havin' not yet mentioned the Mallcore melanoma that's been gnawin' away at the flesh o' the Czech grind scene for the last couple o' years, Cerebral Turbulency bein' one of its various infected flagships, but I must lob my cards on the table and admit that my soft spot for their works is so squashy, that I really don't mind how many rotten Nu Metal fluids they splash their work with, because I'll still enjoy it in one way or another. Probably worst affected, Alienation Mental and Pigsty sustained notable Korn damage on their last couple of outings, but I nevertheless acquired the resultin' works, which all served as guilty pleasures. I'm sure that even if healthier acts such as Mincin' Fury and Guttural Clamour of Queer Decay, Jig-Ai, Destructive Explosion of Anal Garland, 40% Gradi etc were to extract the last bits of clangy blast and silly piggy vox, and replace their entire sound with a combination of the faux-ferocity of Coal Chamber, Slipknot, Chimaira, Spineshank, Static-X, downthesun, Crossbreed, Dry Kill Logic, Motograter, Kittie, Grade 8, Element Eighty, Logic 34, Synthetic Delusion or zero1zero, the plastic angst of Adema, Flaw, Staind, Cold, Five Bolt Main, Depswa or Coilbox, the commercial sensibilities of Sevendust, Linkin Park, Drowning Pool, Nonpoint, Il Nino, From Zero or Trust Company and even the religious approaches of Flyleaf, Heaven Below, Falling Up or Gryp, I'd still close the blinds, play it at low volume, and enjoy it immensely. Enough of that, lets have a spin thru CT's latest!
Accordin' to the tombstone graphic inside the digipak, this is their final release of their fifteen year career, and they parted ways not long after its release earlier this year followin' the Grind Finale farewell gig in Ostrava, CZ (flyers for said show were nicely tucked inside!). The show would've been the perfect excuse to go holidayin', but, alas the UK economy it on its knees, and most of us are havin' trouble findin' pennies to buy perishable produce let alone flight tickets to grind gigs.
This is a good, solid swansong; on which they've managed to go out with an extremely satisfyin' bang (or blast [or clatter]). Well, the stuff on disc sounds nothing like any of the limp-wristed mosh-pit bliss I listed in the second paragraph, and you shouldn't feel obliged to mockingly grunt the words ‘Me loco!' over any of their riffs; you've got massive, judderin' blasts, lethal serrated guitars, compellin' basswork and an extremely broad range of vokill grunts, growls and gargles. The high-speed grindin' terror kicks in almost immediately, with the snare bein' pummeled at such an excessive rate that the guitar gets chopped up into blocks of riff-shudder, with the vox pokin' out all over the place in order to perform all kinds of inhuman hideousities. They've taken their classick style (now Czechgrind hallmarks) of very dense, heavy and writhin' guitar riffs, rich and varied vokill uproar, sudden jerkin' time changes and highly strung percussive skull-battery, arranged those into songs with a good balance of blast ‘n' bounce, and then added a smelly layer of crustgrind and perhaps a few powerviolent elements to the thing, which gives it fun and appealin' variety, and should please both grindy and crusty ears. Many will agree that it's more excessive in terms of terrifyin' speed and sheer energy in its performance than Crash Test, and almost on a par with their classick recordings, or maybe a much more rounded re-assortment of the best riffs, rhythms and ideas expressed on their past efforts.
Released by those rogues at Khaaranus Productions, Segregace K0 has been given some rather nice treatment, which is fair enough, what with this bein' their final release, it's only natural to give them a good send off. Digipakked glossily with inverted colours, this is a lovely thing to hold while you listen. I've no idea what the domino theme is supposed to represent, but it looks good on the cover; a heap of the little spotted white blocks, some with their values rubbed off by grubby fingermarks, and the one central to the pile resemblin' an effects pedal, with the band name across its middle, some of the letters bein' reversed or turned upside down. Oh CT, what does it all mean?? Production is nice too.
Takin' favourite cuts of Regurgitate and Dead Infection, maybe some Dahmer and perhaps a wee sprinkle of earlier Cock and Ball Torture, fuzzed around the edges with a fair bit of Agathocles, they've added to that pile o' old filth a fair bit of the stuff that has popped up around them in the scene that they've been blastin' about in for the last decade and a half, so you might hear some Mincin' Fury, Ahumado Granujo, possibly some Jig-Ai and Flyin' Brains, and also the later works of veterans Malignant Tumour.
If you enjoy listenin' to grind made in the Czech Republic, then you ought to be orderin' this right away in another tab or window. Loyal fans of Cerebral Turbulency will probably have this frequent rotation already, but if not then they bloody well should.
